Brachystegia fleuryana Chev. Family: Leguminosae

Other names
zebra wood (UK); zingana (Gabon and Cameroons)

Distribution
Gabon and Cameroons

The timber
A decorative wood, light gold in colour, with narrow streaks of dark brown to almost black. The surface is lustrous, and the texture somewhat course. The wood is hard and heavy.

Working qualities
Zebrano is mostly used as a veneer, usually as decorative banding. The veneer is sliced, and quarter-cut in order to avoid buckling due to the alternating hard and soft grain. The veneer must be glued with care, and should be treated with clear filler before polishing. Finishes well on belt sander.
